Spotify enters Russia and 12 other markets without podcast support
Spotify's CEO and co-founder Daniel Ek confirmed two years ago that the service will be launched in Russia (and India and African countries) at some point in the future. Although no specific date was mentioned at the time, the music streaming service has now fulfilled this promise and launched more markets.
Today, Spotify announced the launch of ads in 13 new countries in Europe, including Russia, Albania, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Moldova, Mountains, Northern Macedonia, Serbia, Slovenia and Ukraine.
This means that the platform is now available in 92 markets.
As it expands, Spotify will highlight local artists from these new markets in 200 new playlists that will be available to listeners worldwide. Customers in these countries can also use the Premium option of the service, Premium Family level and Premium Duo. However, of the 13 markets, only eight markets have access to Spotify’s student premium subscriptions.
Especially for Russia, Spotify will customize the user experience according to user preferences. For example, the company has planned about 100 playlists of various popular types. A team of Russian music experts will also regularly process and update these compilations. Russian users can also share artists, albums and playlists in their Instagram stories. However, podcasts will not be available in the country (via Engadget).
Gustav Gyllenhammar, vice president of market and user growth at Spotify, positions these new markets as a key part of Spotify's "overall global growth strategy." The company also cited a study by the International Federation of Recording Industries, which ranked Russia as the 17th largest streaming media market in the world.
